It is the first question almost every restoration owner asks, and the honest answer is less satisfying than the one most agencies give. Here is what the timeline actually looks like, and what should be happening at each stage.
The short answer
Expect the first visible movement in the local map results around month two or three, and meaningful ranking gains between months four and six. Competitive metros with several franchise locations take longer. Smaller suburbs can move faster.
Any agency promising page one in thirty days is either quietly buying that position with ads, or they are counting a ranking for a term nobody searches.
Why it takes that long
Local rankings are built on three things that all move at different speeds. Your Google Business Profile can be fixed in an afternoon, but Google takes weeks to re-evaluate it. Reviews accumulate at whatever rate your crews finish jobs. And the pages on your site have to be crawled, indexed, and then earn enough trust to outrank companies that have been there for years.
The work that produces the biggest gains is also the least visible: service area configuration, page speed, schema, citation consistency. None of it looks like progress in month one, and all of it is why month four works.
What should happen, month by month
Month one: audit and foundation
Baseline rankings grid-tracked across every city you serve. Google Business Profile corrected. Technical issues on the site found and fixed. Tracking installed so later results are measurable.
Months two and three: first movement
Profile changes start registering. Review velocity picks up if the system is in place. You should see position improvements in the suburbs closest to your address first, because proximity is weighted heavily.
Months four to six: compounding
City and service pages begin ranking. Map pack positions in your core suburbs stabilise. This is usually where call volume becomes noticeably different rather than statistically different.
Beyond six months: expansion
Once your home market is solid, the work shifts outward into neighbouring areas where competition is thinner and cost per job is lower.
What to do while you wait
This is exactly why most restoration companies run paid search alongside SEO. Google Ads and Local Services Ads can produce calls in the first week, which covers the gap while local SEO compounds underneath. As rankings improve, you can scale paid spend back.
Warning signs your SEO is not working
- No baseline. If nobody grid-tracked your rankings before starting, nobody can prove improvement later.
- Reports full of impressions and keyword counts but no calls or booked jobs.
- City pages that are one template with the place name swapped. Google filters these.
- No change to your Google Business Profile in the first month. It is the highest-leverage asset you have.
- Month five with no movement anywhere. That is not patience any more, that is a problem.
If you want to know where you actually stand before committing to anything, we will run a free visibility audit across every city you serve.
